Ethical Reflection on Ready Player One
Ready Player One is a novel set on a dystopian future that focus on the idea of video games and virtual reality. Even if there is a premise on finding a secret price which is a big reference to Easter eggs in video games. There is an ethical issue that we can experience at this moment with some video games. There is being a big criticism on some games that people are spending to much time on them and people loosing touch with reality. World of Warcraft is the biggest example of this, a game that was able to reach 12 Million players at one time, receives great criticism that causes people spend a great amount of time. People are not focusing on their current lives and focusing on the progress of their characters inside the game. A game where they are connected to so many people and there is a system that can create value to the different actions you do in the game. Where users are learning managerial skills so they are able to manage a large group of people. A place where the currency of the game was able to surpass the value of some countries currency. We can see how a virtual world is creating real problems and people are able to solve them. This make us think that if people are finding a purpose inside this virtual game , who are we to judge those people who are finding happiness in this area? Yet there are letting something go quite easy which is society. Society is something so fundamental in our lives, is the foundation of our civilizations. If we don't contribute anything to it , eventually it will come down and we would only have the virtual game for our entertainment. Sounds quite good for the people that are in favor of games, yet there is a problem with this premise. What is stopping the creation of a game inside of World of Warcraft? We can enter in an endless cycle of creation and destruction of different realities until we are not able to recognize ourselves. We have to seriously consider the implications of virtual reality in our society. We are not far away, from reaching it. We have games that are able to handle millions of users at the same time. Virtual Reality is becoming more and more relevant and m,ore intuitive to use. So a program as OASIS is not far away from being a substitution for our current reality.
